Writing Activities
When we get students to write, there should be an underlying focus on good storytelling. Not just choosing interesting adjectives, or being wild with choice of characters or absurd situations, but delicately crafting an interesting story.
The activities in this section of the website are focused on getting students to think outside the box with they writing. The activities encourage students to focus on character, setting and conflict.
Here are a number of activities that you can run with students:
- How to Write a Short Story
- Classroom Short Story Collection
- The Box
- Story Generators
- Choose your own adventure
- Roll the Dice
- List Stories
- Writing Prompt of the Week
- Getting Creative
- Quick Writing
- Imagine Your Life as a Movie
Check out this video, which highlights the importance of storytelling and how to avoid telling a bad story. This might be a great tool for yourself in reflecting how you speak about storytelling in the classroom.
