3-Way Summaries

The Situation

You want to see what students have learned during the lesson or from the text.

The Solution

A three way summary is when students summarise a topic using 10–15 words long, 30–50 words long, 75–100 words long. The purpose here is for students to become economical with their word choice. In each summary, they need to think very careful about the level of detail they choose to use.

Here is how it works:

  1. After students have engaged in a text or lesson, ask them to list the following in their books:
    1. Three things that they have learned from the lesson or text.
    2. Two questions that they still have.
    3. One aspect that they enjoyed.

You can use the students responses to guide future lessons and make adjustments to your teaching strategies.
