Think, Pair, Share

AITSL STANDARDS: 3.3 – Use teaching strategies

Select and use relevant teaching strategies to develop knowledge, skills, problem solving and critical and creative thinking.

The Situation

You want your students to collaborate equally.

The Solution

A Think, Pair, Share is a fundamental cooperative activity that you can run with students if you want them to interact, brainstorm and develop ideas.

Provide students with a question; for example, what makes a great story?

  1. Students think for 10 seconds (This is to build in safety and ensure students are thinking about their response).
  2. Students share equally, provided with 30 seconds each to share. After 1 minute, stop students to revise as a class and review ideas on the whiteboard.
  3. To add an additional element to the activity, you might assign Partner A and B. At the end of the activity, you can say “Partner B stand up and share your idea to the class.” Remember to remind students at the start of the activity that this might occur, so should be prepared to share.
