It is clear that AI generated images and information is become more and more a part of our every day discourse. Through this change in technology and approaches to teaching, we need to adapt to what this technology can offer to our profession and classroom experience. Recently, I have been exploring the use of AI-generated images for creative writing prompts. Use the website: https://www.imagine.art/, users can create images based on simple prompts provided to the AI search engine.
Teaching Focus
AI generated images can offer a spark of creativity to writing. Simply provide students with a AI generated by yourself. Here is a simple prompt that I imputed just to see what would be generated:
The image is strange, irregular and absurd. But in this strangeness is a conversation that can arise. As a reader, we begin to ask questions. Where is this restaurant? Why is the car inside and occupying most of the space?
If the image does not generate an idea with value, I might choose to create variation. Here is an example of this variation:
Again, these variations provide an opportunity for students to question what might be occurring within the image. This is the basis fo students in tackling questions in a wide variety of settings including NAPLAN, OLNA and ATAR exams.
Activity
Once you have generated an image that provides options for creative writing and discussion. Have student annotate the image based on the following sequence and prompts:
- SEE: What can the see in the image? Focus purely on the content of the image.
- THINK: What do you think might be happening in the image? Imagine this is a photo, what do you think might have happened before the photo was taken?
- WONDER: What questions can you create about the image?
Students can then develop ideas about the image that will become the basis for a short story piece. Alternatively, you might like to challenge your students and have them create ideas for a persuasive or interpretive text based on their ideas.
